The Department of Chemical Engineering was established in 1993 and began admitting undergraduate students. Subsequently, the master’s and doctoral programs were launched in 1997 and 2000, respectively. In 1999, the department officially inaugurated its dedicated building, covering an area of over 2,000 square meters, equipped with comprehensive research and teaching facilities to support its growing academic and research activities. Currently, the department has 16 full-time faculty members, one full-time teaching assistant, one administrative staff member, and one technician.

In recent years, the domestic chemical industry has entered a transformation phase due to intense international competition, industrial relocation, and increasing public emphasis on environmental conservation. In response, the department aims to align its development with trends in research and education while addressing industry needs. In addition to emphasizing foundational chemical engineering knowledge in its research areas and curriculum, the department focuses on the development and application of advanced materials and precision processes, biomedical and biochemical engineering, as well as polymer and nanotechnology. This ensures the department evolves into a modernized chemical engineering program. Furthermore, dedicated teaching laboratories for key development areas have been established, with the goal of preparing graduates to become pioneers in advancing the future of the chemical industry.

Faculty members in the department secure over 40 million NT dollars annually in research funding from the National Science and Technology Council and industry. The department actively participates in interdisciplinary research projects within the university and across different faculties, while strengthening collaborations with the industrial sector.
In the fields of biochemical and biomedical engineering, the department leverages the strong traditions of the College of Agriculture and the College of Life Sciences at the university to advance precision agriculture, functional foods, and biopharmaceutical technologies. In polymer and nanotechnology, the focus is on precise molecular design and polymer science and engineering to develop innovative products and composite materials.
In advanced materials and precision processes, the department emphasizes the development and application of novel chemical engineering materials, integrates cutting-edge manufacturing processes to enhance productivity and reduce production costs, and conducts research on waste reduction and pollution prevention. Additionally, through computer-aided process simulation and design, the department strives to develop optimized manufacturing processes.
